Easy to miss

Skin tears are high-risk, acute wounds but may not always present as such. They are often missed, misdiagnosed and mistreated, which can easily result in a skin tear becoming a more complicated wound. Not only does this make them harder and more expensive to treat, but it prolongs healing and impacts quality of life for the patient.

Easy to treat

Skin tears are easy to miss, but fortunately they are often easy to treat with the right tools and training. We partner with the International Skin Tear Advisory Panel (ISTAP) to ensure that nurses, carers and healthcare professionals across all care settings are equipped with the information they need to assess, treat and prevent skin tears.

Dressing selection can significantly improve treatment on skin tears as proven in a recent Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT). Watch Dr. Kevin Woo as he looks at the effectiveness of soft silicone dressings for the healing of skin tears compared with local best practice where soft silicone dressings are not used ¹ .

FOCUS ON THE FLAP

Once you know the risk factors, and what to look for, skin tears are much simpler to identify and treat successfully.

The first thing to look for is the skin flap. This will help you to diagnose whether the wound is a skin tear, and assess its severity. You can then follow the treatment protocol.
