Antimicrobial effects of silver-containing wound dressing
Antimicrobial, silver-containing wound dressing is effective in reducing microorganisms and biofilms.
Highly exuding and chronic wounds often contain high levels of microorganisms and biofilms, which can significantly delay the healing process 1 . In response, Mölnlycke Health Care developed an antimicrobial version of the Exufiber® gelling fibre wound dressing.
The antimicrobial dressing, Exufiber Ag+, contains silver, which has been proven effective against a broad range of microorganisms and biofilms 2 3 4 . Pre-clinical testing of the Exufiber® Ag+ antimicrobial dressing has employed several testing methods to simulate different aspects of the dressing’s antimicrobial properties The findings show:
- Exufiber Ag+ is effective in reducing biofilm (in vivo)
- Exufiber Ag+ and its antimicrobial properties have been thoroughly tested and reflect that Exufiber Ag+ is effective against a broad range of pathogens, showing sustained antimicrobial action for up to 8 days
